ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Erin Wasson (MSW, RSW) is a registered social worker and the founder of the veterinary social work program at the University of Saskatchewan, Western College of Veterinary Medicine. She is experienced in managing the human side of animal-related issues, including: animal hoarding; companion animal grief and loss; managing farm stress; and large-scale disasters involving livestock (wildfires, regulatory depopulations, high mortality disease outbreaks etc.).
In 2014, Erin implemented veterinary social work services at the WCVM, the first of its kind in Canada. Since that time, she has been providing support to staff, students, faculty, and clients of large and small animal clinics.
Erin is passionate about the provision of support services to underserved communities including rural and remote settings. She is active in the promotion of health, well-being, and the management of stress with veterinarians and allied professions. In doing so, she has worked collaboratively with professional associations, animal welfare organizations, regulatory bodies, and other groups to provide meaningful continuing education on occupational wellness.
Prior to her work in veterinary medicine, Erin worked clinically in several areas including: mental health, substance abuse/misuse, crisis response, interpersonal violence, trauma, disordered eating, geriatrics, disability, and youth work. She has spent her career working with individuals, groups, and communities, as an advocate, clinician, and resource to promote resiliency.
